A couple weeks before the quake, my friend and I had started a blog called Talking Barnacles to introduce Japanese artists abroad, but then one day Japan got torn into pieces. Immediately afterwards I noticed a lot of little things amongst the big things that everyone was talking about; and I thought that those little things should be mentioned as well before they were forgotten, so my friend let me take over this site, and now it is what it is…

Originally my diary of the first seven days in Tokyo posted on Talking Barnacles was supposed to be just that- seven days- but on my return back to Tokyo after a four day rest in Fukuoka, a tougher and more complex question than survival ensued, which was the same on everyone’s minds:

What should we do now?

Soon afterward, I lost my job… I decided to continue writing my diary and photographing what was going on in my life…the panic and fear of being unemployed in a foreign country in times of uncertainty, following my dreams or continuing a stable path, parental/financial pressures, etc. while also recording the lives of my roommate Ian, his girlfriend Yuki, and our cat Willy; as well as our neighbors, our neighborhood, Shinjuku, and Tokyo… because I began to realize that the beauties and struggles of everyday life were even more compelling and difficult than those in times of crisis.

Talking Barnacles is a one year diary about disaster, family, friendships, love, pain, loneliness and everything else that goes along with living.

Talking Barnacles
